Perhaps I shouldn’t be writing in my current condition of agitation. But, here I go.
I just finished skimming through the motions from the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) meeting that just happened earlier this week. I want to clarify that I am not and have never been affiliated with the SBC. However, I’m extremely uncomfortable with what I am reading about decisions made by the juggernaut of a “religious” institution.
As I read through some of the motions that were made and some that were put off until next year it appears to me that they are spending way too much effort on what they do not identify with rather than what they do identify with. They want to be sure that they are not identified with Mark Driscoll because of his vulgarity, open views of alcohol consumption and his “colorful” language (my term not theirs). They are also not willing to be identified with the Pepsi Company if they head towards their openness towards the gay and lesbian community…here comes another SBC boycott event.
Now, I listen to Mark Driscoll because he is an incredible influence on our church culture in America. I also drink Pepsi when it’s on sale at our grocery store like it was this week. However, I’m not a huge advocate for either Driscoll or Pepsi. But, the point is that I’m not going to define myself by whom I do not like.
The church must define it’s self by whom they love and the unconditional characteristic of this love. STOP it church!!! We are indicting our judgemental selves by taking this stance against things instead of for Christ.
15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.[c] 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Great post and super reminder! Love your blog. I’m praying that your house is ready to sell soon and that your buyer is just waiting the sign to go up!
